West and South-west Crete
The capital of West Crete is Chania Town” a pretty Venetian city which also has some Turkish influence due to the city being also occupied by the Turks” was previously the capital of Crete, however, Heraklion being more central and also where many attractions can be found was declared the capital. Chania old town surrounds the Venetian harbour and narrow walkways and mini streets that criss cross each other behind the harbour where you find an abundance of tavernas, shops that sell leather goods, gifts and much more.
Chania airport is on the Akrotiri peninsula and there are numerous luxury and ordinary villas. There are apartments and taverna rooms along the coastline where you find some lovely sandy beaches. Zorbas mountain is clearly visible from Stavros, Blue Beach Apartments lie in the foothills of this mountain.
Moving westward from Chania you will come across many inlets and small vistas along the sea road, Kato Stalos, Agia Marina and Platanias are further along where tourism flourishes, tavernas, restaurants, bars, shops and fast food outlets line the sides of the through road. Moving southward you find Omalos where Samaria Gorge starts high up in the mountains and slopes down to Agia Roumeli on the shores of the clear blue Libyan sea. There are ferries that go to Loutro “a gem on the edge of the sea from “Hora Sfakion “Sfakia“ where the harbour wall is lined with some fantastic tavernas serving local Cretan delicacies and fresh caught fish, local lobsters and crabs.
Eastward from Sfakia approx. 15 kms you reach Frangokastello with its famous castle and the wide sandy beach just below, Frangokastello is a quaint corner of the South-west coast where you can enjoy the mild sea, the beautiful beaches while spending your relaxing holidays in villas, apartments or taverna rooms all within a short stroll to the sea edge.
